Hyundai Verna was first launched in the year 2006 in India.

And ever since the car has received a very good response.

It was and still is the most beautiful looking and powerful car in its segment.

But nowadays compact SUVs have taken over the Sedan segment.

More people are preferring compact SUVs over sedans nowadays.

But I purchased a Hyundai Verna SX over a compact SUV.

And in this article I am gonna tell you why I purchased a Hyundai Verna SX over a compact SUV.

And Since I have completed almost 4 years with the car, I am also gonna tell you all of the good things and all of the bad things about the car.

However there is a new model of the Hyundai Verna in the Market and I am also gonna tell you what has changed in the new model over the older model.

So read the article till the end to find out if it still makes sense to buy a Sedan over compact SUVs in 2021.

So without wasting much time let’s start from the way the Verna Looks.

Hyundai Verna SX: Looks

Looks is one department where the Hyundai Verna always had the upper hand compared to its rivals.

In fact when the Fluidic Verna was launched, people went crazy for it.

Everyone liked it purely for its looks.

Outside and inside, it just looked amazing.

And so is the case with the next gen Verna.

The legacy of the looks continues with next gen verna too.

In fact when I was evaluating my options, I was considering two cars.

One was the Hyundai Verna and the other was the Honda City.

And when I took my parents to the showroom to see both the cars.

Their clear choice was the Hyundai Verna.

So looks is one thing that always kept going for the Verna and it’s a kind of design that not only youngsters but the elders like too.

So let’s look in detail at how the Hyundai Verna SX looks.

Front Looks

When you see the car from the front, the first thing that will come to your mind is “How Elegant the car looks from the front”.

There is a big Hexagonal grill that covers the major part of the front.

You get chrome lines in the grill which give the car a classy look. In between the chrome line you get the hexagonal grill.

On the side of the grill sit the big headlights.

Headlight panel consists of the normal headlights, Cornering headlights and the DRLs (Daytime Running Lights).

Now you must be wondering what are cornering headlights, right!

Cornering headlights as the name suggests, are used while cornering or turning the car.

When you drive a car the throw of the headlights is in the front.

But when there is no street light and you have to take a sharp turn then you can not see what is in the turn because the throw of the headlight is in front.

Which can be fatal.

In this situation, cornering headlights come to the rescue.

What cornering headlights do is that when you steer the car to the left or right, the cornering headlights get activated and give the additional throw in the direction of your turn.

For example, if you steer your car to the left, the left cornering headlight will get activated and will provide additional throws to the left.

And when you steer the car to the right, the right cornering headlight will get activated and will provide additional throws to the right.

Which helps you in seeing what lies at that turn or how sharp is the turn and you can easily maneuver your car accordingly.

Cornering headlights is a very useful feature.

In fact I would say it is a must have feature if you live in hilly areas or in the rural areas where there are no sufficient street lights.

Now let’s get back to the front looks of the car.

Below the grill you also get fog chrome surrounded fog lamps.

So this is how the outgoing Hyundai Verna looked from the front.

However the ongoing Verna is more sportier looking and you do not get much chrome highlights.

It seems like Hyundai has shifted its focus from elegance to sportiness.

Side Looks

When you stand on the side of the car the first thing that you will notice is the big diamond cut alloy wheels. 

Which suits the overall side profile of the car.

Then you get body colored ORVM (Outer Rear View Mirrors).

And there is a chrome line below the windows that starts from the front and goes all the way to the back.

And you can also see the shark fin antenna at the back.

Overall the Verna looks absolutely spectacular from the side because of its coupe-like structure.

Lets move to the back now to see how the Hyundai Verna SX looks from the Back.

Rear Looks

When you stand at the back of the car, the first thing that you will notice is how big and chunky the rear of the car looks.

Another thing that you will notice is the unique and gorgeous looking tail lights. Which give the Hyundai Verna SX a distinctive and elegant look.

However in the ongoing Verna these headlights have been changed to give the car a more sporty looking instance.

But I just loved the old tail lights of the car.

You get the Hyundai logo in the middle.

Verna badging on the left.

1.6 badging on the right, which tells you that it is powered by a 1.6L petrol engine.

In the Diesel variants, you get 1.6D badging. Which tells you that it is powered by a 1.6L diesel engine.

However you do not get these badging in the new model, because there is no 1.6L engine option in the new model.

We will talk about the engine options in the later part of this article.

And you also get the SX badging on the right, which tells you that it’s a Hyundai Verna SX model.

You also get reflectors on the bottom.

Overall the Verna looks beefy and elegant from the rear.

However the new model of the car looks more sportier and has some additional elements that make it look like a sporty sedan.

Like there are all new tail lights.

You also get fake air vents and sportier looking black cladding at the bottom.

And there is also a chrome line around the reflectors.

Hyundai Verna SX Interiors

Hyundai is known for its beautiful looking interiors.

And it has not disappointed with the Verna too.

The Interior of the car looks amazing, it is a very nice place to be in.

You get dual tone interiors in the Verna.

Everything is designed beautifully.

You get a nice 3-spoke steering wheel. Which is good to hold.

You get all the control buttons on the steering wheel.

Then you get a nice looking instrument console which is nicely laid out.

In the older version you get analogue speedometer and tachometer and a small digital screen in between to show you all the needed information.

However in the new version you get all digital instrument consoles. Which has a digital speedometer and tachometer.

Then on the left you get a beautiful looking infotainment system, which is feature rich and is very responsive.

In fact it is the best in its class.

In the older version you get a 7” infotainment system.

However in the new version you get a 8” Infotainment system.

All the other things remain almost the same.

Hyundai Verna SX Space

Space is the department where you will not complain in the Hyundai Verna.

Yes it is not as spacious as its rival, but it will be more than enough for most of the people.

The front row seats are spacious enough.

There are bottle holders on all 4 doors and unlike other cars they can hold bog 1 litre bottles easily.

And you also get the umbrella holder on the front right door.

Move to the rear seat and things are good here too.

There is good knee room, the shoulder room is quite decent and the headroom is quite enough too.

For taller people headroom and legroom can be a little less but for people with average build, it is more than enough.

You can easily fit three adult occupants in the rear seat without any complaints.

The boot space of the car is 480 litres which is massive enough to carry luggage of your whole family.

Hyundai Verna : Safety and Features

You get 2 Airbags and ABS as standard in all the variants of the car.

In fact in top variants you get upto 6 airbags.

The car also comes with a long list of features. You name it and there is a possibility that car might have it.

And the Hyundai Verna SX model gets almost all of the features.

Hyundai Verna : Engine and Performance

The older version had 2 engine options.

1.4L Petrol, 1.4L Diesel, 1.6L petrol and 1.6L diesel engine options, which were available with both manual and automatic transmission.

The 1.6L petrol engine used to produce a maximum power of 121.3Bhp and a maximum torque of 151Nm.

The 1.6 Diesel engine used to produce a maximum power of 126.2Bhp and a maximum torque of 260Nm.

However the new version comes with 1.5L diesel, 1.5L Petrol and 1.0L turbo petrol engine.

The 1.5L diesel engine produces a maximum power of 113.4Bhp and a maximum torque of 250Nm.

The 1.5L petrol engine produces a maximum power of 113.4Bhp and a maximum torque of 144.15Nm.

The 1.0L turbo petrol engine produces a maximum power of 118.35Bhp and a maximum torque of 171.61Nm.

Now on paper these numbers might not seem much.

But once you sit on the driver seat and put your foot down, you will realize that these are just numbers.

The car just pulls cleanly, does not matter which gear you are in.

You will never feel that you are out of power or the car is not powerful enough.

The engines are so responsive and refined that you will enjoy hitting the red lines in the car.

Hyundai Verna : Ride and Handling

You will just love the ride quality and the handling of the car.

The seat cushioning is great, you get a good amount of under thigh support and the suspension of the car is also perfectly tuned.

So the ride quality for the driver and the other passengers as well is very great.

In fact after riding it for 5-6 hours you will not feel too fatigued.

The steering wheel of the car is super light, and offers good response and feedback.

But while driving the car in the city, it sometimes does feel a little vague.

But if you are not an enthusiast and do not observe things as closely, you will not even feel it.

However the steering wheel weighs nicely at high speeds and offers a very crisp response and feedback.

The clutch of the car is also very light.

So it is very easy to drive in the city and in bumper to bumper traffic.

The word for driving the car in the city as well as on the highway is “EFFORTLESS”.

Hyundai Verna Price

The new Hyundai Verna price starts from 9.29 lakhs ex-showroom and goes all the way up to 15.32 lakhs ex-showroom.

The new Hyundai Verna on road price depends on the city you live in, all the accessories that you take with your car, the engine option that you purchase and the kind of insurance that you buy.

So the Hyundai Verna on road price can differ from person to person.

The price of the Hyundai Verna SX (the model that I have) was 9.99 lakhs ex-showroom and it cost me around 11.10 lakhs on-road.

Color Options

The car is available in some beautiful color options.

However I must say it looks ravishing in the BLACK.

It looks good in white too and the new dark blue color option also looks good too.

Hyundai Verna Mileage

Mileage is not the Hyundai’s forte and do not expect the Hyundai Verna mileage to be great too.

The ARAI claimed mileage of the Verna is around 17kmpl for its petrol engine.

And if you drive it in a relaxed manner you can expect an average of around 12kmpl in the city and around 14.5kmpl on the highway.

But if you drive it enthusiastically, the Verna average will come down to 9-10kmpl in the city.

Should you buy the Hyundai Verna in 2021?

Should you buy the Hyundai Verna over a Compact SUV?

The answer to your question is a big big YES!

The driving pleasure and comfort that you get in a sedan is just unmatched.

If you are an enthusiast and have driven a sedan before, then you will not like the driving dynamics of a compact SUV.

If I am given a choice then I would prefer a sedan over a compact any time any day.

Hyundai Verna offers a long list of features, it just looks amazing, you get a good amount of boot space and you will just love driving it, be it in petrol or diesel.

So if you like a sedan and want to buy a sedan then Hyundai Verna should be your first choice.
